Player Watch: MACC in the UK

  • by

Upholding a long-standing tradition for MACC, four players have traveled to the motherland to ply their trade. Chris Jackson, Jame Guley, James Blair-Holt, and 2017-18 finals hero Josh Brown have packed their bags and joined the poms. We hope to provide regular updates about their exploits during the off-season, keeping in mind that runs and wickets are seldom valued highly when playing cricket overseas.

Chris Jackson

A regular member of our First XI and 2018-19 Second XI premiership star, Chris has followed Kiel Johnsen in joining Nidderdale League team Burton Leonard CC. Based out of Harrogate, Yorkshire, Burton Leonard are in Division 1 of the Nidderdale League and have started strongly. Currently, they sit equal first on the table with 4 wins and 0 losses. Chris has played a large role in this strong start, taking 7 wickets at 13.86. Unfortunately for Chris (and Burton Leonard), he has been unable to land a position in the strong top order, and is yet to bat for the season. Chris, get yourself up that order fella!

James Guley

Another regular member of our First XI, James Guley has reconnected with a former MACC flame. None other than Philip Critchley, who played at MACC in 2006-07 scoring 351 runs at 35.10 for the season. Phil is captain, and has invited James to join him at Ashley CC in the Cheshire Cricket League. The club has started the season well with 2 wins and 1 loss. James has contributed solidly with both bat and ball. He has taken 4 wickets at 12.00 and has made 76 runs at 38.00 including a solid 60 in a losing side. James is pictured here with his Ashley teammates (front row, second from the left). Hopefully James can continue to re-establish the British fear of Australian leg-spinners.

James Blair-Holt

Definitely one of the First XI’s most popular players (known particularly for his eloquence when addressing opposition players), James has also re-connected with long-standing Mont Albert roots, joining Beckwithshaw CC in the Airedale & Warfdale League (get you mouth around that one). Past Beckwithshaw CC/MACC connections have included Chris Forde, Brian Vance, Alex Lilley, Tom Lilley, Oliver Hotchkiss, Peter Hotchkiss and Rob Ellis (apologies if I have missed someone). Beckwithshaw have started slowly, languishing to 9th position on the table. It also seems that James is still making adjustments to the English conditions, scoring 51 runs at 12.75. However, I have no doubt that a big score is just around the corner for big Blairy, particularly when he realises he’s playing on postage stamps (gross generalisation of English cricket).

Josh Brown

Forgotten, but definitely still alive and well, Josh has been plying his cricket trade in Tasmania (who knows why when he has the option of Melbourne and MACC). Anyway, Josh has joined Marton CC in the North Yorkshire & South Durham Cricket League – god, the Brits need to work on their league names. MACC has no-known connection with Marton CC, but Browny has impressed so much that he was listed as captain in his most recent match. He has started well with the ball, taking 4 wickets at 15.75. Similar to Chris, opportunities with the bat have been slim, but maybe with his promotion to captain, he will bat himself a little higher in the order. Marton are currently sitting 2nd on the competition table.
