While rain caused havoc across the Junior and Senior grades last Saturday, a fine afternoon greeted our U16 A’s for day one of their clash with Glen Iris.
Coach Terry is optimistic that the team will be able to defend their score of 5/117 when they re-commence this afternoon at Dorothy Laver Reserve.
See below for a full match update from the coach at the halfway mark of the match.
Mont Albert 5/117 (39) J Marshall 48
The U16A team match started well against Glen Iris, winning the toss & electing to bat. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to push the score beyond single digits before the first wicket fell, with skipper Jack Woods top edging a pull shot and skying the ball to mid-wicket. After a slow start, Jack had been showing good intent, having scored all of his runs off the previous two deliveries he faced. The partnership for the 2nd wicket between Fraser Baddon & Julian Marshall fell just short of 50 runs and again it was a pull shot that led to the batsman’s demise, this time with Fraser bottom edging his shot and the ball cannoning into the stumps.
Nick Kann’s stay at the wicket was fairly brief, but relatively lively, scoring a boundary off the second ball faced, but came to an end on 6 with an edge through to the keeper.
With the fall of the third wicket, the scoring slowed considerably, with tight bowling from the Glen Iris attack offering few scoring opportunities. The 4th wicket partnership yielded 38 runs which were scored over 16 overs with the batsmen labouring to maintain their wickets and struggling to find gaps in the field.
As darkness brought an end to the innings after 39 overs, we had scored 5/117, with Julian Marshall top scoring with 48. Rahul Sulur & Fraser Baddon also made handy contributions of 18 and 16 respectively.
The lads will have to bowl well & provide strong support in the field this week if they are to defend this total, but we’re sure they are more than up to the task if they’re at their best on Friday.
